Reflection for World Issues Presentation

Filed under: Block E, Home work, Social Studies —— adam6 @ 4:20 am

This is the link to my homework

Q. #1 Think about the presentations and reflect on the projects your classmates presented and the information you listened to. Explain with details and specific information what you learned, what you found interesting, surprising, or shocking about the presentations you heard in class.

A. During the presentations that my classmates presented, I learned many interesting, surprising and shocking things. Some things I learned by watching these presentations are that HIV is a virus that causes AIDS. HIV stands for Human Immune Deficiency Virus and AIDS stand for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. I also found out that is pretty hard to get HIV, the only ways you can get it are: Sexual Intercourse, Needles and etc. I also did some research myself and found out that it is contained in four main fluids. 1. Semen, Vaginal Fluids, Breast Milk, and Blood. What I found interesting was that all together there are so much problems in the world from refugees to health issues and so on. Lastly what I found shocking or Surprising was that there are so many refugees in this world. Each day we fight and die more people become homeless. I think we need to work together to solve this issue because its not like the UN is going to do it by themselves.

Q. #2 What would you change to improve your project/presentation if you were to do the assignment again?

A. If I were to do this project all over again I would first of all get an MP3 format of the song that I want inside my iMovie. I would have better strategies of planning and work more effectively. Lastly I would try to bring my research records in so I could plug in more information faster.

Famous Egyptian Reflection

Filed under: Block E, Home work, Social Studies —— adam6 @ 8:05 pm

Today in class, we listened to our classmates present their gods/goddesses and I learned many things about them. I learned that Set was a god of evil and he killed Osiris, and that after Osiris was killed Isis his sister and wife came and collected the pieces of his body to re enact him. I also learned that King Tutankhamen was a very young king and that he died very young but in that short time he did many things. Also what I found interesting was that they even had women pharaohs back then. Usually in the 20th century mostly men are rulers. There was also an act of jealousy between Nefertiti and her sister in which she stole the throne away. Lastly if I got a chance to re-do my presentation I would present with more enthusiasm because your speech can be good but it’s the way you get it out to your classmates.

Sekhmet the Lady of Flame

Do you think you really know about extreme goddesses? Well I’m one! As you might already now my name is Sekhmet and I used to be known as the eye of Ra or as the Lady of Flame, well that’s until I destroyed almost all of mankind. My father Ra changed me into Hathor, so now I am supposed to be the goddess of love and beauty but I still get my way. So why don’t we get started on where I live or who is the most fabulous goddess and some other important things. Also I’m pretty significant and I changed people’s lives, oh why bother, let’s just get started and not waste any more of my time.

I have been called many things but for now I am the Lady of Flame. My name is Sekhmet and I have taken part in more thing than you ever will or have taken part in. Sekhmet means very powerful which I am. I live in my huge home up in the sky. Don’t bother trying to look for it because you aren’t smart enough to even discover it. I was born when my dad was told to summon me to take care of the trouble he caused and so I was sent to deal with your kind. Right now my husband is Ptah. Recently we had a son named Nefertum and I’m still trying to teach him how to destroy an empire. I have many more things about me but you are not worthy enough to make me keep talking so ill move on.

You might think I’m an O.K. goddess but just know that I’m more important than your puny lives. Obviously I’m significant; I’m not really sure why you are even in this world. Well anyways I dealt with those humans that paid no respect for my father. Any thing I do is right so I had to do it. Nothing that you would ever experience. Also ever since I became Hathor, I’ve been known as a god helpful in healing, but I can also spread a plague, and have you ever heard of a goddess with a hot breath, well I created the desert with it. As you can see what I just said shows I’m cool and well, your just normal mortals.

You could say I’m the best goddess but I don’t like to brag. One of the things I did was that I scared so much puny humans that they even gave me a festival to make me happy. I get to eat so much food. I’m sure you can’t afford that. I also have my own cult in Memphis. They perform a ritual containing 700 of my statues. Also since I’m Hathor I will kill anything or anyone that disobeys Maat. I think you should give up trying to be better then I because there is no way you can defeat the truth.

Seeing everything to where I lived, to how I killed your kind and to how I influenced the world, I’m the best goddess to be truthful. I mean which god changed all humans to fear her and who actually has 700 statues shown to honor he or she. Oh and lastly I’m watching you so act loyal! Or you may end up like one of your friends here.

What new information has emerged?:

There are now groups of students of whom were affected drastically my this event taking part in a course to help them go through this time in their life, the groups are ran by psychiatrists and counselors. Police also found out that Seung-Hui-Chou (the student that shot his schoolmates) was carrying two guns and cleared classroom to classroom. Lastly the police stated that in Virginia it is very easy to get weapons. You can order them without a license and get it in a month.

What did you find interesting about this topic?:

What I found interesting about this topic is that how can someone do something like this. The students of Virginia Tech were just trying to do good so that they may succeed in life but to think that someone who is sad about their life would have to end 32 more lives with him just to satisfy himself. This is a very sad event and I hope the students of Virginia Tech should not ever have to experience this again.

What did you like about the initial blog posting?:

I liked how Maya wrote a whole paragraph for each question other than the Who is Involved, this helps the reader understand fully about what she is trying to say and therefore it helps the reader learn about this topic. I like how in the Who is involved question she thought about the whole chain rather then just the topic. She said the people who were selling guns because if they didn’t sell guns so easily none of this should have happened. Lastly I liked how she added a map that showed how far Johnston Ambler Hall was from Norris Hall. This shows how far the students had to run from Norris Hall to Johnston Ambler Hall to escape the gunman.

Map of where it happened

This is the link for this image:  http://www.findlocalguide.com/Maps/Algeria-Map-Big.jpg

What is the Issue?

The issue is that there have been recent bombings in the nation of Algeria.  The bombings were thought caused by a group of terrorists.  The suspected group of terrorists are the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat who recently changed their name to the al-Qaeda.  There have been two bombings so far and a deathtoll  of 23  and about 160 injured.  One bomb was aimed near the primeministers building.

Who is Involved?

The people who are involved in this issue are:

  • The goverment of Algeria especially the primeminister

  • The two terorrists that committed this crime

  • The 23 people dead

  • The dead people’s loved ones

  • The 160 injured people

Who is affected and how?

The government of Algeria is affected because they didnt assign enough security in the country to stop the bombings.  The primeminister is affected also because he was part of the problem and he has to resolve it.  The two terrorists are affected also because they committed this crime.  The 23 people are affected because they now are dead and are not living anymore.  The dead people’s loved ones because they have to grieve and they are sad.  Finally the 160 people who were injured because now they no longer live their lives normal anymore because of that incident.

What would you do if you were directly involved?

If I were directly involved I would first of all strengthen the security around the government buildings such as where the prime minister lives etc.  Second I would then have scanners that would scan the car from distance away so that if there is  a bomb in the car and it goes off it has a less chance to taking away lives.  Lastly, I would raise funds for those people who were injured so that if they have very little money they could afford operations.

What Is the Issue:?

The Issue is that in Indonesia, miners were drilling for gas and because of that an eruption occured and made bunches of mud pour out of the hole.  The mud has been coming out since nine months ago. The mud has been slowly trickling out but now it has formed a lake and has forced many civillians who live around the lake to evacuate and get to a safer place.  Indonesia have got workers to come to the site of the volcano and slowly place metal balls inside the hole to slow the process of the mud.  They have devised a plan to lower fifty metal balls into the hole everyday and slowly plug it up.

Who is involved:?

The people who are involved in this issue are:

  • The Government of Indonesia

  • The Indonesian workers

  • The people who fled their homes to a safer place

  • The miners who were drilling for gas

Who is affected and how:?

The government of Indonesia is affected because they were the ones that made the plan to lower fifty balls into the hole everyday to slow the process.  The Indonesian workers are affected because they are the ones who have to work in the thick mud and lower the heavy balls in the hole.  The people who fled their homes are affected because they’re homes were swallowed by the mud and they have to move to a better location, no one has died yet though.  The miners who were drilling for gas are affected because they are part of the reason the mud is pouring out of the hole.

What would you do if you were directly involved:?

If I were directly involved I would first check the environmental issues that could happen if they lower the metal balls in, because it could relate to environmental issues later on that could affect the area.  I would also set up fundraising events so that I could help give money to those who have had to evacuate their homes.  The last thing I would do is ban the area of any mining until the issue is resolved and we know a safer way to mine.

Wiki Reflection: Homework All blocks (9/12)

1.What would you change about the final product (the wiki you created) if you were to do the assignment again? I would change the way I organized things because to me they didn’t look to good.  I would add alot more information to the wiki and make the formating better than just putting it in a paragraph and having people not know if the information they seek is in there.  I would als make a link that said go back so that they have a hard time searching for the back button.

2. Look at some of the other wikis from any class and find a few that you think are done exceptionally well. Tell me the name of the empire and the block, and then explain what you like about their wiki.  In block E, the Kongo Kingdom, in the environment page, the work was done very neatly and done very well.  She used a great organizing way of putting things in her wiki.  In block D the swahilli trading states they added a link at the bottom of the page going to the other pages so it is easy to navigate around the wiki.  In block F the Ghana Empire they made links at the bottom of the page that show what you are going to learn and they added definitons to words that might be hard to understand thoughrely.

Wiki Reflection: Homework All Blocks (7/8)

This is the link to my homework: http://ssmeetsit.edublogs.org/2007/02/08/homework-block-b-and-g-feb-78/

1. What did you learn from this task? I learned that you can make a whole bunch of different things with the wiki as well as show your information that you havee with the world. I learned that a wiki is a very good thing to do because after adding alot of effort to do the wiki, you remember everything that you do and that makes you an educated person.

2. Did you find this difficult or easy? Why? I found this wiki easy and sometimes hard. What I found easy was the adding of information and in a wiki it is very easy to make your information neat. What I found hard was that sometimes when you an image to your wiki it sometimes doesn’t appear so I had to re do some pictures. Overall this wiki was a fun experience and taught a whole load of information that is very important to me.

3. What would you change about the process you went through to complete the wiki if you were to do the assignment again? If I were to do the assignment again the first thing I would change is that I wont focus so much on design anymore and get more of my information in the wiki. The last thing I would change is that I need to organize my information better. I think we should do the wiki more often.

Response to Kay Lynn’s Blog/Presentation

Title of the article: “Rains in flood-ravaged Jakarta raise disease fears”

Author of the Article: “CBC News”

The link to the CBC website: http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2007/02/06/indonesia-flood-070206.html#skip300×250

Date I viewed the CBC site: 7/2/07
What new information has emerged?:

The new information that has emerged is that most of the people who were evacuated are now coming back to their homes.  About 115,000 people are going back home but the unlucky 220,000 still are waiting for the flood waters to decrease. Also the death toll has increased to a really suprising number of 54.  The government is scared because of all this dirty water that is floating around, it could relate to some diseases that could affect the people.  A blackout has currently occured leaving the city’s 12 million people living with limited food and electricity.  The governments main focus now is to help the citizens and clean up the area around Jakarta and Jakarta itself.

What did you find interesting about this topic?:

What I found interesting about this topic is that a flood can last such a long time.  There must be lots of drains and sewages around the roads and yet the flood is still taking a long time to go down.  Another thing is that 12 million people that live in the city get limited food and electricity.  It must be really hard to live in an area where a flood just occured.  The last thing I found interesting is that the flood actually killed people, im not sure if its possible to swim out of fast moving water but thats just really amazing that the flood killed 54 people.

What did you think about the initial blog posting?:

I think that Kay Lynn did an excellent job in her current events posting because she added a picture that showed the country of Indonesia and it zoomed out to Asia and Africa showing exactly where it was.  I also liked the second picture she added which showed of the terrible floods that is now taking place in Indonesia.  I like how she said that she would help rebuild the schools for children and bring in “must need items” to the people who needed it.  Kay Lynn has no errors for spelling/grammar and she showed an excellent discription of what is happening in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Homework for Block E and H (Thursday 30 November)

Filed under: Block E, Home work, Social Studies —— adam6 @ 10:39 am

This is the link to my homework

Last class we studied about Africa and we found out these things:

Iron Technology’s Impact on West Africa:  I found out

that for millions of years the west African’s used spears and arrows that were made out of bone and usually harvested food that wasn’t so big because they’re weapons were small.  They harvested small things like roots and berries.  We also learned the cycle of how to make weapons and arrowheads, after the African’s found iron they used it to make weapons by first digging up the rocks.  Then they smashed the rock so it’s easier to melt.  After that it is put into a furnace where it is melted and when it turns abit harder, the African’s take the iron and form it into weapons.  We learned how it brought revolutionary changes and this was it: Farming increased because of iron tools made of iron.  The food supplies became bigger and populations grew.  After a while people got so rich in how much stuff hey got they decided to sell some and after that trading centers developed and people grew richer.  The first trade center’s name was Jene-Jeno.  Because of iron African’s have developed alot then before they used iron.

Kingdom of gold (Ghana):  We found out that the king of Ghana practiced the Traditional African Religion.  They thought it prevented bad things from happening.  In the Traditional African Religion they only pray to one god and that the one god created other sub-gods and the sub-gods take care of the world.  We also found out that Ghana had were in unison together.  In the chain of work everyone had something to do.  They all play a part in working.  The king had the absolute power.  The peasants will contribute some of the harvest to the city so the city could manage the trade easier.  Also different parts of Africa had different religion.  Ghana’s strength in they’re empire was from 800-1500.  Ghana had a lot of things to trade to neighbors around, eventually all the money they got was used in the making of iron weapons which helped them takeover the bordering countries so they could develop they’re empire.  Trading towns were split into two sections, there were twelve different mosques ina trading town.  They separated Islam from the Native Traditional African Religion.  The king of Ghana ruled all religious trades and Ghana used North Africa to rade salt for gold.

The Kingdom of Mali under Mansa Musa: I found out that the Mandinkes leader was named Sadiento and the Sosso leader Samorgoru had a battle for Kirana.  I learned that Mali was twice as big as Ghana and had around a strong 700 years of living.  I also found out that Mansa Musa brought 1000 pieces of gold to the Makkah and because of that the cartographers included Mali on the Africa map.  He was the King of Mali.  Since the cartographers in Makkah added Mali to the map decorations start to appear in Mali.  The last thing I learned for this section was tat Augu Tigis are mares that rule the province.

How the Songhai Empire Grew to Greatness: I found out that the kingdom of Songhai was ruled by Malian people.  The Songhai empire received help from Gokayaman and waged war on the Malian empire and after that people began to see the Songhai empire start rising.  The king in the Songhai empire was overthrown and Askia Muhammad became king.  Askia made a strong government, he made Islam the main religion, he owned the Niger river and Askia had 32 sons.  Songhai had strong market inspectors free people and soldiers work in farms.  All in all, Songhai was a good empire and was the center of learning.

The conquest of Songhai by Morocco: Al-Mansur believed that if he conquers the salt and gold trade he will make more money.  He had such a large army that he needed more gold to pay the army off.  His army was expensive because they had high technology weapons and armor.  So in the 1580’s he planned to attack Songhai.  In 1586 the Sultan Al-Mansur began his offensive on the salt mines at Taghaza.  He ordered 200 musketeers to do the job at Taghaza.  The Songhai government decided to stop trade there so Al-Mansur decided to attack Gao.  I found out that Al-Mandur got 2000 soldiers to attack Gao.  Al-Mandur traded the slaves and some gold to the Sultan of Songhai.  After all these attacks political unity in Ghana, Songhai and Mali was destroyed.  Salt and gold trade was ruptured and was wasted.  Now days Moroccan rulers still rule the place.

That is all i have learned in the last class.  Thank you Ms. N.
